Thom’s Blog #2: WWE 2K, Why Do I Do This To Myself!?
When it comes to the WWE 2K series I have a love hate relationship with it. I hate it at times where I can see blatant improvements that are ignored and I love it as it can fulfils the fantasy I have to be involved within the wrestling world, booking and organising events etc. But I always feel like I’ve wasted time and money after playing the yearly games for a while as they start to feel the same.
With 2K23, I want to buy it (especially since it’s out this week) but I just know I will feel like I’ve invested my money in a silly way. So I’m asking myself why do I do this to myself!?
The Desire
Well the desire to have the latest game stems from 1. Being a fan of wrestling and 2. The fact that this game series has been a staple of my life since I was around 5 years old when I first played WWF Smackdown on the PS1.
Also the fact that I can escape to another world where I can book the matches etc is such fun for me, hence why when MyGM came back into WWE 2K22 I was so happy and the fact that they have expanded the mode makes me even more giddy in all honesty. I don’t like to make fantasy matches with non wrestlers or even put myself in the game – it feels dirty to me, but the management simulation style of gameplay is right up my alley, must be something to do with my love of games such as Cities Skylines and Two Point Hospital/Campus.
The Issues
Besides the fact that the roster hardly changes, the gameplay is the same with a few tweaks here and there the most baring issue really is the limitations of the creation suite. With only 100 creation slots for custom wrestlers isn’t enough, especially when we consider how many wrestlers there are globally. Fire Pro Wrestling World does not have a limitation for creation slots, nor does it hold back custom music! Although it’s not ideal by having a limited amount but damn it’s better than a kick in the crotch like what 2K bring to gamers! There’s so many other issues but if 2K can sort that out then the experience will be much much better for me personally.
I can’t help but feel bored when I play the game but attached to use it as a creative outlet, kinda like how YouTube videos and BG4GHub used to be. Oh well, I’ll likely pay the £65 for it but I know it’s something I’ll equally regret but enjoy… I think I need to expand on this issue deeper than other a quick blog.
